Gradiant has launched “21st Century Women Technologists,” a series of talks led by female engineers from the Technology Center, aimed at highlighting women leaders in the tech industry.
The initiative, driven in collaboration with Hi Coruña, kicked off this afternoon with a talk by Shaila Calvo, head of eHealth at Gradiant and a graduate in Telecommunications Engineering from the University of Vigo. She shared her experience in developing R&D&I solutions focused on data use in the FLUTE project, as well as the integration of new technologies and AI to support healthcare in the ICAREWOUNDS project.
Role Models
During her presentation, Calvo highlighted that “the change from our grandmothers’ time to ours has been immense, but there is still much work to be done to achieve a truly equal society, especially in our field.” Regarding her role models, she noted that “a while ago, I would have highlighted Hedy Lamarr as the first technologist I studied who worked in telecommunications. But over time, I realized that my real role models were the women I met throughout the years—those who managed to balance their work, family, and personal hobbies and interests.”
After the talk, attendees had the opportunity to exchange views in a discussion that emphasized the importance of women technologists.
“21st Century Women Technologists” will continue on November 20 and December 18, with talks by Aurora Paz and Araceli Goiriz, from Gradiant’s Advanced Communications Department and the Security and Privacy area, respectively.
