In these discussions, the participating women in tech engage in honest conversations about the reality of women in STEM careers

The tech industry is advancing rapidly, but it still faces challenges such as the gender gap, which, rather than narrowing, has widened since the pandemic. According to the “Women and Innovation 2024” study by the Women, Science, and Innovation Observatory, 61.3 percent of Spanish ICT companies do not employ any women. However, multiple studies indicate that the root of the issue lies in early education: only 0.7 percent of girls show interest in pursuing a degree related to digital technologies, compared to 7 percent of boys.

To address these issues, our technology center has created a space for discussion called “Tech Talks: with a Gender Perspective” by Gradiant. In these talks, women technologists from our organization and the University of Vigo explore key technology topics based on their own experiences.

Building a More Equitable Tech Industry

In this four-episode series, we explore innovation, industry challenges, the future of women in STEM, and female leadership. Each conversation helps us highlight diverse experiences and reflect on the steps we can take to build a more equitable sector.

Tech Talks: Innovation examines the impact of AI on the industry and how technological innovation is applied in the daily work of professionals. The participating technologists share their insights on the integration of AI into production processes, drawing from their own experience. At Gradiant, we actively work on projects like PlatGDIA, which focuses on the development of AI and digital twins in the industrial sector.

They also discuss the challenges of bias in data, a critical issue that can perpetuate inequalities. Ensuring data can be shared securely is essential—greater data diversity leads to less bias in AI training. This is precisely the goal of the TRUMPET project, which you can learn more about here.

The Challenge of Being a Young Woman in Tech

The discussions also address the difficulties women face in the tech industry, including the need to work harder to be taken seriously. This challenge is even greater for young women. In the end, the participants share key insights on overcoming these obstacles—don’t miss it!

In this first edition of “Tech Talks: with a Gender Perspective” by Gradiant, Marielena Márquez, engineer-researcher and Head of Industry at Gradiant, takes part alongside Isabel Burdon and Adriana Febles from the Advanced Communications area, María Navarro from the Intelligent Systems area, and Shenia Kuchumova and Eva Sotos from the Security and Privacy area.

We hope these discussions inspire future generations and contribute to fostering a more equitable and inclusive environment in technology. Follow us on social media so you don’t miss any episode of Tech Talks!

The European TRUMPET project and the PLATGDIA project fund this initiative to highlight the role of women in technology.
