The ACE (Advance Cutaneous Evaluation) project is an application for healthcare professionals that provides a clinical decision support system for the treatment of chronic wounds. Based on a photograph, it is capable of recommending a topical treatment for the skin lesion.
Chronic wounds represent a significant challenge in healthcare due to their high prevalence and the economic impact they generate. Their treatment requires complex management due to the variability in available therapies, the diversity of products on the market, and the need for specific training for nursing staff. Effectively addressing these wounds is crucial to improving patients’ quality of life and reducing the costs associated with their healthcare.
ACE is a mobile application for healthcare professionals that, based on the identification of tissues in a photograph provided by the nurse, is able to recommend the topical treatment for a wound. To achieve this, ACE uses image processing modules based on deep learning that can recognize up to 6 types of tissues in the wound (necrotic, eschar, granulation, epithelial, macerated, and erythema) and relies on the latest clinical practice guidelines for the treatment of chronic wounds.
The objective of this system is to reduce evaluation time, increase its reliability, and reduce the number of incorrectly applied dressings. All of this results in faster, more reliable, efficient actions at a lower cost.
