The EMULSION project (EMERGENCY AND MULTIMEDIA SATELLITE INTERFACE ON THE MOVE) aims to develop a modulator and demodulator for a digital communication system targeted at mobile devices such as phones, PDAs, or terminals in vehicles. The developed system will enable applications like multimedia content dissemination, message transmission, or real-time emergency services. To achieve a robust system with adequate coverage, a hybrid scheme combining satellite communications (operating in the S-band) with a terrestrial repeater network similar to the one used for digital terrestrial television (DTT) will be used. This combination will significantly improve current satellite communications, extending them to mobile scenarios like trains or cars.
