Today marks five years since United Nations world leaders adopted a set of global goals to eradicate poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. The The 17 SDGs are a call to action for all of us. A call to reach out to those who are being left behind, to support local action and innovation, to strengthen institutions and data systems, to rebalance the relationship between people and nature, and to secure more funding for sustainable development. In these 5 years, much progress has been made in many places, but actions to achieve the SDGs are not advancing at the speed and scale needed.

Besides this global initiative, Europe has also designed its own roadmap for making the European economy sustainable. In December 2019, the European Green Deal, the European Union’s strategy for the next decade was released focused on achieving climate sustainability, using this objective as an engine for economic growth and social welfare.

2020 is the start of a decade essential for action to tackle poverty, the climate emergency and empower women and girls.

ICTs and Sustainable Development Goals

Technology innovation has a key role to play in improving economic development, facilitating social inclusion and enabling better protection of the environment. It is not a secret the central role that ICT plays in technology and digital progress and transformation of industry and society. Thanks to information and communication technologies we can achieve better results in terms of scale, speed, quality, accuracy and cost that were unthinkable a few years ago.

There are many studies and publications that show the positive impact of ICTs and the catalytic role in achieving all the SDGs 2030, as they accelerate the 3 fundamental axes of sustainable development: economic growth, social inclusion and environmental sustainability

In the series #WeAreCommitment, we’re talking about how the work we do every day at Gradiant contributes directly to reducing poverty and hunger, improving healthcare, creating new jobs, mitigating climate change, improving energy efficiency and making cities and communities sustainable.
