ICAREWOUNDS project partners meet to finalise the evaluation of their digital platform for integrated care of patients with chronic wounds
The goal of ICAREWOUNDS is to validate an integrated care model for the treatment of chronic wounds through the use of advanced technology, enabling real-time monitoring of lesion status and adapting treatments to each person’s exact needs at every moment
The project is currently also in a validation phase across several European hospitals and has recently been recognised as an “innovative solution that improves healthcare resource efficiency, reduces infection risk, and accelerates healing processes, positioning itself as a new benchmark in chronic wound treatment”
ICAREWOUNDS partners, working through an international consortium coordinated by Gradiant, met yesterday in Helsinki (Finland) to finalise the details of the digital platform that will enable integrated care for patients with chronic wounds using eHealth technologies and trustworthy AI.
During the meeting, attended by Shaila Calvo, project lead, and Ángela Freiría, both from Gradiant, it was agreed that, following the favourable opinion of the Clinical Research Ethics Committee (CEIM), Phase 1 of the deployment will begin. This phase involves recruiting volunteers from the institute itself to evaluate the platform.
A European-level example
The essential objective of ICAREWOUNDS is to design, implement, and validate an integrated care model for chronic wound treatment through a dedicated application that adapts therapy to each person based on the type and progression of their wound. The tool combines clinical expertise with advanced technology, enabling continuous follow-up, real-time monitoring, and precise personalisation of treatment.
The project is currently in the validation stage in several European hospitals, confirming its potential to become an international benchmark in technology-driven healthcare innovation.
ICAREWOUNDS was recently awarded the Disruptores Innovation Awards 2025, recognising its contribution to the digital transformation of healthcare. The award highlights this innovative solution’s ability to improve healthcare resource efficiency, reduce infection risk, and accelerate healing, establishing it as a new reference in chronic wound management.
The ICAREWOUNDS project is carried out by a European consortium that includes, in addition to IIS Galicia Sur, Gradiant (Spain), the meeting organiser Lappeenranta University of Technology – LUT University (Finland), Medical University of Łodz and Sigoria Ltd. (Poland), University College Dublin (Ireland), and CyberEthicsLab (Italy).

The ICAREWOUNDS project has received funding from the European Commission, ISCIII, NCBR, HRB, AKA and MUR under the co-funded partnership Transforming Health and Care Systems (THCS), GA No. 101095654 of the European Union’s Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Programme.
