Tech Talks: Women’s Leadership in Technology
Only 19% of ICT specialists in Europe are women: a challenge in tech leadership
Invisible barriers in STEM: role models, work-life balance, and glass ceilings in technology
Women’s leadership in technology remains a challenge. According to data from the European Commission, only 19% of ICT specialists in Europe are women. Poor work-life balance policies, a lack of role models, and gender biases hinder their professional progress, leading many to abandon their careers before reaching leadership positions.
In each of these audiovisual pieces, also available on Gradiant’s YouTube channel, they give voice to women who have found themselves in similar situations, for example, facing the glass ceiling. The last episode of this four-part series of Tech Talks with a Gender Perspective is dedicated to women’s leadership in technology.
This chapter features the participation of Edita de Lorenzo, Professor at the School of Telecommunication Engineering at the Universidade de Vigo; Marta Castro, Head of Micro-Nanoelectronics and Photonics; Alicia Jiménez, Head of European Projects; Shaila Calvo, Head of eHealth; Diana Sofía Herrera, Senior Research Engineer; and María Crego, Technical Lead in Communication Systems Design.
The session begins with a critical topic: the resignation of many women from their academic careers due to motherhood. Once again, they share the feeling that in technology, women seem to have to be “superheroines” to be heard.
Glass ceilings in the tech industry
In this chapter, the fourth and final episode of this series, the guests highlight the importance of role models and the need to humanize the image of women in technology. Additionally, they reflect on the adoption of more “masculine” attitudes to gain acceptance and the influence of self-imposed barriers.
The Tech Talks conversations have exposed the existing barriers, but they have also highlighted the talent and determination of women in STEM. We hope these talks serve as inspiration for future generations and contribute to creating a more equitable and inclusive environment in technology.
